Landscape Design
Most outdoor renovation projects start with a clear feeling and a blurry plan. You know the yard needs work, you have a rough idea of what you want, but putting it into a layout with real dimensions, specific materials, and a clear picture of how the finished space will look is where most homeowners get stuck. That is what landscape design solves.
Before any construction begins, we work out the full plan for your outdoor space. The layout of your backyard or front yard, how different areas connect, what materials suit the property and the way you intend to use it, and a 3D rendering that shows you the finished result before anything gets built. Simple Outdoor Living has been doing this work across Orange County for over 25 years, and the same team that designs your project is the one that builds it.
Backyard and Front Yard Design
Most of our landscape design projects center on the backyard. How a patio sits in relation to the home, how it flows toward a pool area or lawn, where an outdoor kitchen or fire feature fits within the overall space, how landscaping and hardscape work together across the full yard. The design phase is where all of those elements get planned in relation to each other rather than added one at a time over the years.
Front yard designs come with a different set of priorities. Curb appeal, how the driveway and entry work together, the relationship between planted areas and paved surfaces when viewed from the street. We handle both with the same design process, adjusted for what actually matters in each case.
If your project includes a pool area, we design the full surround: how the poolside hardscape integrates with the rest of the backyard, how the outdoor living areas connect outward from the home, what the whole space reads like as a single environment rather than a collection of separate installs. That connected view of the project is what the design phase produces, and it is what keeps the construction phases that follow on track.
3D Landscape Design
After the site evaluation and consultation, we build a three-dimensional rendering of the planned layout. This shows the finished outdoor space before any work begins on the ground. The patio layout, how the yard is divided between hardscape and planting, where outdoor living features sit in relation to the home and each other, what the space looks and feels like at eye level.
For most clients, this is where the project gets finalized. Moving a patio, adjusting how two areas of the yard connect, reconsidering where an outdoor kitchen sits relative to the seating area. Those changes take minutes on a rendering. After construction is underway, the same changes take days and cost money.
Most properties we work on have existing conditions that shape what is possible. A slope in the backyard, a mature tree that is not coming out, a structure that sets a hard boundary for what can be designed. We work around those conditions from the start rather than discovering them mid-project. If something on the existing site is going to conflict with what you want to build, we identify it during the design phase and go through the options before any construction scope or budget is set.
Site Evaluation and Landscape Planning
Before anything gets drawn, we evaluate the site. Sun exposure across different areas of the property, how the land sits at various points, where grade changes will affect where a patio can be placed or how a planted area will drain. These are different on every property and they directly shape what gets designed and where.
Grading is part of every backyard design conversation. When a yard has elevation changes, those need to be accounted for in the layout before any outdoor element gets planned around them. Getting a grade detail wrong during the design phase is a quick correction. Getting it wrong after construction has started is a different problem entirely. We factor this in from the first site visit, not as an afterthought once the patio plan is already drawn.
Landscape Materials Planning
Material selection is something we handle during the design phase. By the time the 3D rendering is complete, we have also worked through what materials make sense for the project: paving options for the patio and surrounding areas, wall materials that fit the design and the structural requirements, surface choices that perform under real Southern California conditions. Those decisions come out of the design process, not out of a quick conversation on a job site the week construction starts.
With over 25 years working on Orange County properties, we know how different materials actually perform here. What holds up well on a coastal property is not always the right choice for an inland yard with more heat exposure. The guidance we give during material planning comes from seeing those products on real projects over time, not from what is currently in a supplier's catalog.
Our Landscape Design Work
Our project gallery shows finished outdoor spaces across Orange County, including full backyard transformations, front yard redesigns, poolside layouts, and integrated outdoor living designs. It gives a clear picture of what comes out of the design process when it feeds into a well-executed build.
